  • The blog Passion of the Weiss frequently does some thought provoking writing on hip hop, and they compiled a top 50 hip hop album list since 2000 in a new series of posts. They take the opinion of prominent music critics, bloggers, and hip hop scholars and then narrow it all down. These are the same guys who proclaimed Illmatic the greatest album of all time. So who got the number one spot? I’ll give you one guess.

    Couple of problems IMO.

    - Like Water for Choc needs to be way higher on the list.

    - I like MF Doom, but 4 times is a little much.

    - Wale? a mixtape? seriously? waaay too soon.

    - No Atmosphere or Brother Ali but they have the Streets twice? Wtf?

    - Most of the list is heavy East-coast biased….

  • Jameel Says:

1,4, 8, 11, 12, 18, 17…its some good shit on here..get rich or die trying should be higher

  • Jared Says:

I love this quote they wrote about the Blueprint:
“The Blueprint isn’t the best rap album of the decade because it’s faultless, but because it steamrolls over its faults so effortlessly. It’s the sound of a victory lap, the sound of an artist at the top of his game making the album he wanted to make, current trends be damned. It’s swagger personified. It’s Rocky beating the Russians. It’s Ali beating Frasier. It’s MJ winning a ring. It’s the fuckin’ Blueprint.”

  • HEIGHTSGUY Says:

Illmatic?? this list has some holes in it. No way TI is on and not mobb deep,UGK only once. To be honest No limit should have at least on space on the list.

  • justin hustle Says:

ghostface 4 times and second to the blueprint.

    im a-ok with that!

  • Jameel Says:

    its top albums of 00’s….

  • Smoke at WTF?!.com Says:

ARGH!!!! The Game is garbage always has been… put him at the 50th spot, even if only for teh irony… MF Doom must have gathered these stats… Lupe Fiacso’s and the Clipse’s should be a lighter higher! they were Debut albums. and Wale’s mixtape?! I agree with Jared…

  • Jared Says:

yeah no way is Wale at 29… thats just ridic.

  • King Says:

If we puttin mixtapes up you gotta put up all of the clipse we got it for cheap up..

  • Jared Says:

the wale mixtape is totally out of left field. there shouldn’t be any mixtapes on here IMO.

and yeah the documentary banged when it first dropped

  • King Says:

Since 2000 I didn’t read it right..my fault…but the clipse shit is still a go LOL

  • King Says:

Carter 1 is Wayne best album…that should be on the list instead of Carter 3

  • broach Says:

    Wait Wait Wait….No Jadakiss….No AZ…????????

  • MK Says:

Food & Liquor at 49 just doesn’t make sense. It begs me to ask the question, do these fools even listen to music or, do they just skim through it?

I mean lists are lists so whatever, but Food & Liquor should be WAY the fuck up there.

  • N8 Says:

Wow! No Thug Motivation 101 huh…. and where’s Graduation, Lupe’s The Cool, and American Gangster?Chronic 2001 came out in this decade didn’t it. I know this is just my opinion but I think everyone should agree with what I just mentioned.

  • Smoke at WTF?!.com Says:

if Game is on the list, he should be at the 50th spot! and i just now see that they put the Marshall mathers LP AFTER college Dropout… SWTICH!

  • N8 Says:

Wow! No Thug Motivation 101 huh…. and where’s Trap Musik, Scarface’s Made, Lupe’s The Cool, and American Gangster? Chronic 2001 came out in this decade didn’t it. I know this is just my opinion but I think everyone should agree with what I just mentioned.

  • trav dave Says:

  • Jared Says:

    N8 - Chronic 2001 actually dropped in ‘99 i’m pretty sure.

  • niketalk's own Says:

  • Jared Says:

i agree i think luda def deserves a spot too… they don’t show the south or west coast much love. but they admitted it on their site

  • PRETTY23 Says:

Wow King–and no Trap Muzik, Tha Carter III and not Tha Carter (the original)!! Yeah they’re definitely just skimming through albums.

  • trav dave Says:

    no drake???

  • Nita_FAB Says:

Young Yeezy- Thug Motivation and LIL KIM-THE NAKED TRUTH ( A certified CLASSIC))!!!

  • Jay Midnyte Says:

    Diplomatic Immunity

  • DJ Smoov Says:

okk.. no the Blueprint isnt #1 on my list and there are some that should be moved up on here… #1 should be the Jay-z “Black Album” by far the best of the 00’s, T.I’s “The King” should be in the Top 5, Kanye West “college dropout” was his best work. and yeah somebody did put a few “NO Namer” artist on here!! But Jeezy “Thug Motivation 101″ should be on here is was a hood Classic. Someone Didnt do there homeowrk on this list because there are a few Classics that are not even on here.. the list gets 1 star outta 10 and that just because some took the time to do it.. POOR TOP LIST..

  • DJ Smoov Says:

I just went to listen to this “madvillian” ummm song are like 1:30 long and the shitt sucked Kimbo cock.. WTF who did this list “madvillian himself.. horrible..

  • Najee D. Redd Says:

MF DOOM is my favorite artist but neither Vaudeville Villain or Born Like this should be on there. Mos Def’s Ecstatic should have definitely cracked this 50 as well as Thug Motivation. If we’re talking Ghostface then Bulletproof Wallets should make it on anyone’s list before Pretty Toney LP. But overall, I can’t say I’m too mad at this list.

  • Najee D. Redd Says:

And they actually had the fuckin’ nerve to put a Deltron 3030 on there!!!!

  • Jerome Says:

If Wales mixtape made it then Diplomatic Immunity Vol 1 and all of the dipset mixtapes vol 1-4 should have made it…

  • ike Says:

yea no dipset what up with that but i wood put blueprint 1st to

  • Brav Says:

Man o man….smh THIS LIST SUCKS lol

But being that it’s based off an opinion I can’t be mad.

I won’t list them but there are 50 other albums that should’ve been considered before a bunch of these. And the order is all screwed except for #1

  • brittany Says:

idk about this list, maybe thee keyword was ‘HIP HOP’ bcz Ludacris’s “Back for the first time” & Nelly’s “Country Grammar” should’ve made the list, even tho Nelly was a bit on the commercial side, it still was a nice CD

    & i agree w Broach, where’s jada & AZ???

-&YES kim’s naked truth should be on here ! she got 5mics for it too,
-they prolly could’ve showed cam a little more love too

  • DiscoStu Says:

I’ll Be Damned If They Showed Cam ANY Love! Graduation Should Be Top 5 Hands Down, Speakerboxxx/Love Below Should Be Higher, Mos Def - Black on Both Sides Should Be Up Here, And Yo, I Straight Forgot About Stankonia..!!]

  • ike Says:

How jeezy 1st cd didn’t make it

  • Good Hair Chaddie B. from up the way... Says:

This list is way too biased towards Kanye West. Supreme Clientele is doper than The Blueprint as well. The inclusion of the Streets is ridiculous. He doesn’t even make the best music from over in Londontown.

  • Papa Says:

Yeh top 10 is tight, but the other 40 is all over the place. understood if it was a poll of just 100 people.
I think Documentary/Doc’s Advocate and L.A.X. by Game should defiantly all be somwhere in 50-20, Nas’s Albums Untilted (very good concept) and God’s Son should be in it. I don’t know how Wale’s mixtape got there but his new album is alright. Also think Snoop Dogg - Blue Carpetment, Ice Cube - Laugh Now Cry Later, Immortal Technique - Revolution Vol. 2, Lupe Fiasco - The Cool, and also some K’NAAN. got more but comment alread yot long rofl.
